How to track who changed what and when in the WordPress admin

If you’re managing a WordPress website along with several other people and you need some way of tracking what was changed (e.g. a menu tweak or an edit somewhere), when and by who there’s a plugin for that.

Called Simple History, simply install and active this plugin and it’ll automatically track all changes that are made in the WordPress admin itself.

To view the changes go to Dashboard > Simple History from the WordPress menu.

From there you can search by keyword or browse through a certain time period.

It could even be useful if you’re the only one working on a WordPress website but you’d like a simple record of what you’ve changed.

(Bear in mind it won’t retrospectively show any changes that have been made in the WordPress admin before you installed and activated the plugin. Only changes that have been made after the plugin is activated).

Making simple CSS adjustments to your WordPress website (without editing your theme)

If you need to make a small CSS (style) adjustment to your website you could edit your theme’s CSS files via FTP or the WordPress admin.

But if you’d only like to make a small change or don’t want to edit files directly you can use one of the following solutions to easily add one or more CSS rules to your website.

Plus, all without the risk of deleting any existing code or seeing your changes lost if there is an update to your theme in future.

With the Jetpack plugin using its Custom CSS module

If you’re using Jetpack, Automattic’s ‘many plugins in one’ solution you already have a Jetpack module that allows you to do this.

First you’ll need to activate the feature by going to Jetpack > Settings from the WordPress menu and activating the Custom CSS module, it’s not already.

Once it’s activated it’ll look like this.

2016-02-05 at 13.27.png

(Your Jetpack plugin must be installed, activated and connected to WordPress.com to have this screen).

Once it’s activated – or if it’s activated already – you’ll find under Appearance > Edit CSS from the WordPress menu.

2016-02-05 at 13.29.png

From here, you can simply type CSS rules into the editor that appears and save the stylesheet when you’re ready to apply them.

2016-02-05 at 13.31.png

As long as you’re writing correct CSS these will override any of the styles in your theme file.

If your styles don’t show immediately try clearing any cache plugins or other solutions you’re running on your site.

If you make a mistake, you should also have the option to rollback to any previous version of your CSS changes or simply delete all your CSS styles completely.

Without Jetpack via the Simple Custom CSS plugin

If you’re not using Jetpack or you’d prefer not to you can use the Simple Custom CSS plugin instead.

This performs in a very similar way to the Jetpack solution but without having to install the heavier Jetpack plugin and connect your site to WordPress.com.

After installing and activating the plugin, you should see a new option in your WordPress menu.

2016-02-05 at 13.39.png

On the next screen you can write CSS rules straight into the editor that appears and hit Update Custom CSS when you want to apply them.

(If your website is using any caching plugins or services you may need to clear the cache after writing your changes to seem them on your site).

Dependencies

As long as you keep either of these plugins installed, active and up to date your CSS rules should keep working.

For obvious reasons, I recommend you only use one of these solutions at any one time!

How to (easily) embed a Facebook post in WordPress

I discovered the WP Embed Facebook WordPress plugin when wanting to copy / paste a Facebook post URL into the WordPress post / page editor and finding that it didn’t embed nicely (and automatically).

For example, when I embed a tweet like this, I just paste the URL onto a new line in the WordPress editor and it looks like this:

Just launched http://t.co/Gd6wwetv6s (WordPress website setup for busy people) pic.twitter.com/GvDApNwZUa

— Nick Davis (@nickcdavis) July 8, 2015

Doing the same with a Facebook link doesn’t have the same effect though (at least at the time of writing).

However by simply installing and activating the WP Embed Facebook plugin I was able to embed a Facebook post in a similar way just by pasting the URL of the Facebook post into the WordPress editor.

To see WP Embed Facebook in action check the following link (and scroll a little):

http://genesiswp.guide/2016-02-05/#showcase

I haven’t tested it for Facebook video, page, event, album or profile embeds. The developer says that you’ll need to set up a Facebook App for at least some of those…

2016-02-05 at 10.26.png

…but it claims it will work for those too and it worked for me for posts without creating a Facebook App.

How to get your Facebook post link

If you’re wondering how do you actually get the individual link for a Facebook post.

Simple hover over the date on the Facebook post you want to grab…

2016-02-05 at 13.08.png

Copy the link from the address bar on the next screen…

2016-02-05 at 13.09.png

Now, paste it into the WordPress editor on a new line wherever you want to use it…

2016-02-05 at 13.11.png

Dependencies

Bear in mind, of course, that if the plugin stops working or you deactivate it, you embedded posts will stop working as well!

For now though it seems a reasonable solution for those wanting to easily embed Facebook posts (and possibly other types of Facebook content) into their WordPress posts or pages.

Alternatives

Don’t want to use a plugin?

It’s possible to embed a Facebook post into WordPress without a plugin but it involves a few extra steps and fiddling with code.

Future native support?

I’m hopeful that at some point in the future WordPress will provide a solution where you can simply paste a Facebook URL straight into the editor, just like a tweet.

For now though it seems like the WP Embed Facebook plugin is the way to go!

*The 7 Day Startup (the book of the same name by Dan), was also a huge factor in the launch of Theme Valet and something I continue to recommend to other entrepreneurs as a fantastic framework for getting unstuck not only on ‘what business should I pursue?’ but ‘how should I pursue it?’.
